Where Europe Meets California: Catalina Island

Where can you feel like you’re in Europe (Capri island for me) in California? You can even pretend you are taking the boat from Positano on the Amalfi Coast where in fact, it’s just off the coast of California, to me; from Palos Verdes to Catalina Island. Or what we call “The Island”. “The Island” offers that Euro feel so much that it reminded me of being in Positano, Capri or St Tropez (those oceanfront towns I love so dearly) for a minute when I opened the doors that open to the Juliet balcony facing the street and the ocean view before my eyes, with a slight sound of a Vespa maybe in the far. Palos Verdes was indeed designed with the Amalfi Coast in mind as Frank Vanderlip likened the peninsula to the Amalfi Coast when he purchased the peninsula in the 1910s. I feel completely at home with all of the Euro feels. People gather on the street and at the plaza…restaurants and shops along the dock. I just miss the taxis with the canopy on the top and the wild drivers in Capri (and of course the luxury boutiques 🤪🛍️). Day Trip Itinerary to Catalina Island (Departure from San Pedro)

8:00 AM – Departure from San Pedro

Board the Catalina Express ferry from San Pedro to Avalon. Enjoy the scenic 1-hour and 15-minute boat ride.

9:15 AM – Arrive in Avalon

Upon arrival, head to one of the local golf cart rental companies such as Catalina Island Golf Cart Rentals or Island Rentals to pick up your golf cart for the day.

9:30 AM – Explore Avalon by Golf Cart

Drive around Avalon and explore the charming town. Make sure to stop by the iconic Catalina Casino, the Wrigley Memorial & Botanic Garden, and other scenic spots.

10:30 AM – Catalina Island Conservancy Garden to Sky Hike

Head to the Catalina Island Conservancy and enjoy the Garden to Sky Trail. This moderate hike offers stunning views of the island and the ocean.

12:00 PM – Descanso Beach Club

Make your way to Descanso Beach Club for a relaxing beach experience. You can rent a cabana or a lounge chair and enjoy the pristine beach.

12:30 PM – Lunch at Descanso Beach Club

Enjoy a delicious lunch at Descanso Beach Club. Try their famous Ahi Poke Nachos or their Signature Mai Tai while you take in the beautiful ocean views.

2:00 PM – Kayaking or Snorkeling

After lunch, rent a kayak or snorkeling gear from the Descanso Beach Ocean Sports and explore the crystal-clear waters of Catalina. Look out for marine life and enjoy the tranquility of the ocean.

4:00 PM – Grab Ice Cream at a Famous Spot

Head back to Avalon and treat yourself to some ice cream at Lloyd's of Avalon, a beloved spot known for its delicious treats and old-fashioned charm or Sailor's Delight!

4:30 PM – More Golf Cart Exploration and Return

Spend some more time exploring Avalon by golf cart. Visit the Catalina Island Museum or take a drive up to the hills for panoramic views.

6:00 PM – Return Golf Cart and Dinner at Blue Water Grill

Return the golf cart and then head to Blue Water Grill for a delightful dinner. Savor fresh seafood dishes like the Pacific Swordfish or try their famous Clam Chowder. Enjoy the harbor views as you dine.

8:00 PM – Return to the Ferry Terminal
