I Think I've Fallen in Love. Hard.
Maison Héritage: A Love Letter to Paris, Written One Room at a Time
There is a particular feeling that comes with falling deeply, madly, almost ridiculously in love.
You know the one.
When something occupies your thoughts from the moment you wake up until you close your eyes at night. When you catch yourself daydreaming in the middle of an otherwise perfectly ordinary day. When the smallest details suddenly become the most fascinating things in the world.
When simply thinking about it makes your heart flutter.
Well, I've fallen in love.
Hard.
And the object of my affection?
A beautiful, centuries-old Haussmannian apartment in Paris.
Yes, an apartment. 😂
But oh, it is so much more than that.
Paris Had My Heart Long Before It Had My Address
I've loved Paris for as long as I can remember.
Not simply for its beautiful buildings, extraordinary fashion houses, magnificent museums, or fabulous restaurants, although heaven knows I adore all of those things.
I've loved Paris for the way it makes me feel.
The way an ordinary walk can turn into something extraordinary. The pleasure of sitting at a café with absolutely nowhere urgent to be. The sound of footsteps on old cobblestones. The beautiful wrought-iron balconies. The rooftops. The flower shops. The boulangeries. The elegance of everyday life.
And, naturally, the occasional glass of champagne.
Or two. 🥂
Over the years, Paris became a collection of little rituals and beloved places.
Rue Cambon. Place Vendôme. The Ritz. The Jardin des Tuileries. The Opéra Garnier. Cafe de Flore. Les Deux Magots. The streets where I could wander endlessly, admiring architecture and imagining the lives unfolding behind those beautiful windows.
Even before I owned a home there, Paris had always felt like home.
I never needed an itinerary to fall in love with the city.
I simply needed to be there.
And now, after all these years, I have something I once only dreamed about.
My own front door in Paris.
When a Property Becomes Something More
As a real estate professional, I've spent years helping people find homes.
I understand floor plans, architectural details, neighborhoods, market values, and the practical considerations that make a property a good purchase.
I know how to evaluate real estate with my head.
But this particular purchase?
Oh, my heart has been very involved. 😂
From the moment I began imagining our life inside this beautiful Haussmannian apartment, something shifted.
The soaring ceilings. The intricate moldings. The original parquet floors. The marble fireplaces. The tall French windows.
Every architectural detail seemed to whisper a little story.
I found myself imagining not simply how the rooms would look, but how they would feel.
The morning light.
The sound of music drifting through the salon.
The pleasure of returning after a long day wandering Paris, opening my own front door, setting down my handbag, and knowing I didn't have to check out in the morning.
No hotel reservation.
No suitcase waiting to be packed.
Just home.
Je suis chez moi. I am home.
Three little words that mean so very much.
I've Already Lived a Thousand Little Moments There—in My Imagination
Here's where I must confess something.
I think about this apartment constantly.
And I mean CONSTANTLY. 😂
I imagine the salon with its forest-green velvet Chesterfield sofas. A beautiful dusty-pink méridienne beside the marble fireplace. Antique furniture that has already lived a hundred fascinating lives.
French-blue taffeta curtains, trimmed in rich red velvet, framing those magnificent windows.
Yes, blue taffeta and red velvet.
Because apparently, when I fall in love with a Paris apartment, I become even more theatrical than usual.
And I wouldn't have it any other way.
I imagine gilded mirrors reflecting the afternoon sunlight. A beautiful chandelier hanging beneath those grand ceilings. Fresh flowers on the table. Music playing softly.
And champagne, naturally.
Not because there's a special occasion.
But because an ordinary Tuesday afternoon in Paris can be a special occasion if you decide it is.
I've even found myself getting ridiculously excited about shopping for mattresses, choosing curtain fabrics, and hunting for antique headboards at the Saint-Ouen flea markets.
Mattresses!
Who knew a mattress appointment could feel romantic?
But that's the funny thing about love.
Even the practical details become part of the magic.
I'm Not Just Decorating an Apartment. I'm Creating a Life.
What I love most about this experience is realizing that I'm not simply furnishing rooms.
I'm imagining memories.
Christmas with family gathered around. Laughter floating from the dining room. Beautiful dinners that stretch long into the evening. Friends visiting from different corners of the world.
A quiet morning with a café noisette.
An afternoon spent reading beside the fireplace.
Coming home from the ballet at the Opéra Garnier, still carrying a little of its magic with me.
Returning from a stroll through the neighborhood with flowers, perhaps a baguette, and almost certainly something I hadn't intended to buy.
And those wonderful days when nothing extraordinary happens at all.
Because that's what I want most.
Not just to visit Paris for its extraordinary moments, but to live there for its ordinary ones.
To know the neighborhood.
To have favorite little shops.
To recognize familiar faces.
To feel that wonderful sense of belonging that comes only when a place becomes part of your everyday life.
A Home That Feels Unmistakably Mine
I have no desire to turn this beautiful old apartment into something that looks like every other luxury residence.
I want it to have a soul.
I want to respect its history while filling it with the things that make me happy.
Beautiful antiques alongside comfortable furniture. Rich fabrics. Color. Texture. A little drama. A lot of romance.
I want every room to tell a story.
Some pieces will be old, some new. Some will be carefully planned, and others will be discoveries made while wandering through an antique market.
There will probably be moments when I change my mind about a fabric, spend an unreasonable amount of time contemplating a chandelier, or fall hopelessly in love with a piece of furniture that I absolutely did not go looking for.
Such is life.
Especially life in Paris. 😂
But I want to enjoy every bit of the process.
Because one day, the shopping lists will be finished.
The curtains will be hanging.
The furniture will have found its place.
And the apartment will simply be our home.
I don't want to rush past the beautiful anticipation of getting there.
Perhaps This Is What Falling in Love With a Place Really Means
I've been trying to understand why this apartment has captured so much of my heart.
And I think I've finally figured it out.
It's not just the architecture, although I could admire those moldings forever.
It's not the address, although I adore our neighborhood.
It's not even the thrill of finally owning a beautiful piece of Paris.
It's the life I can see unfolding there.
It's the woman I am when I'm in Paris: endlessly curious, romantic, inspired, playful, and completely in love with the art of living.
It's the feeling that something I've carried in my heart for so many years has finally become tangible.
A dream now has walls.
It has windows.
It has a fireplace.
And soon, it will have the most fabulous French-blue taffeta curtains. 😂
One Day, I'll Sit There and Remember This Feeling
I can already picture it.
One afternoon, when Maison Héritage is finally furnished, I'll sit on my pink méridienne beside the marble fireplace.
Perhaps with a glass of champagne.
I'll look at the curtains, the antique treasures, the beautiful ceilings, and all the little details that once existed only in my imagination.
And I'll remember these days. The anticipation. The excitement. The endless daydreaming. The photographs I studied a hundred times.
The fabric samples, furniture searches, measurements, emails, and all the delightful little decisions.
I'll remember how completely, hopelessly, wonderfully in love I was with this home before it was even finished.
And I hope I never lose that feeling.
Because if there's one thing I've always believed, it's that life is far too precious to save all our joy for some distant special occasion.
Wear the beautiful dress.
Carry the precious handbag.
Open the champagne.
Buy the flowers.
Enjoy the moment you're in.
And when a dream you've loved for years finally becomes real, allow yourself to fall head over heels in love with every minute of it.
Maison Héritage isn't simply our Paris apartment.
It's a love letter to a city that has held my heart for so long. A new chapter for our family. A place for beautiful memories yet to be made.
And perhaps most importantly, a reminder that some dreams become even more beautiful when they finally come true.
Paris, mon amour.
Je suis chez moi.
